I am grateful for the opportunity to work for Pacific Health Ministry on the island of Maui. First, I would never have moved to Maui 13 years ago if it was not for the opportunity through PHM. Second, the collegial relationships formed over the years have been and continue to be a network of aloha. Finally, I appreciate the support PHM has provided me as I have navigated through the ups and downs of Covid. Mahalo Ke Akua for the gift of PHM to the health care institutions of Hawaii.

Chaplain Chuck Card, Pali Momi Medical Center

  1. What are you grateful for?
I am grateful to my mother and father for the support they’ve been over the many years of my life. They provided financial support as I went through college and pursued a Theological degree. Without their financial support, college life would have been difficult. I would have to go to work to get through college financially. I was able to focus on study instead of work. Also, their enthusiasm emanated to me because I was pursuing a higher degree. They believed in the importance of college education. Furthermore, I am grateful for the Christian upbringing my parents provided me. As family, we attended church regularly. Christian values were formulated as a young person and guided me in the straight and narrow path that lead me into a successful life and career. Thank you Mom and Dad!
  2. What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory/tradition or quote?
I considered Hawai‘i always a home. But in my life, I worked away from home many times. Through the military, I was sent to Germany (Baumholder and Schwaebisch Gmeund) on two different occasions in my career. Through the U.S. Army, I deployed to Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Kuwait. I was sent to Fort Jackson, South Carolina; Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Fort Hood, Texas. Away from home, I would call my parents and wish them “Happy Thanksgiving.”The memories of being away from home on Thanksgiving gave me an appreciation for America and its tradition. Home away from home, I would spend Thanksgiving with soldiers and families wherever I was deployed. This was a memorable Thanksgiving experience for me. This experience helped me to appreciate America and the Thanksgiving tradition.

Rev. Anke Flohr, Executive Director

  1. What is your favorite Thanksgiving memory/tradition or quote?
One of my favorite quotes from Meister Eckhart (1260-1328): “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, ‘thank you,’ that would suffice.American Thanksgiving is not a holiday I grew up with. In Germany we have an annual harvest festival every October giving thanks for harvest and the reciprocal relationships: “take care of the land and the land will take care of you.” E Malama ‘oe I ka ‘Āina, e Malama ka ‘Āina ia ‘oe. I grew up on a farm in North-Germany where everyone worked hard. All the hard work culminated in the annual Erntedankfest (harvest festival) giving thanks for all there was. I learned that feeling gratitude and appreciation allows me to experience a sense of “abundance” even in drought times.
