25th Annual Hawai‘i State Hospital Remembrance Service

As wayfinders on life’s endless voyage,
We remember those who sailed before us.
We continue forward with their stories,
Planting seeds of healing and gentleness.
This poem was written by PHM Chaplain Hilary Eash (serving at the Hawai‘i State Hospital, HSH) for the 25th Annual Remembrance Service on October 10, 2025, remembering 667 HSH patients (from 1930–1960) whose ashes were unclaimed and stored for years in the basement of the hospital.
In 1960, they were officially buried at the Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery. Twenty-five years ago, HSH began an annual tradition of holding a Memorial Service at the burial ground around the bronze memorial plaques. This service honors the deceased and continually raises awareness of mental health care, reduces stigma, and encourages open conversation about emotional, spiritual, and psychological well-being — all of which deeply impact our lives.
On October 10, 2025, we also observed World Mental Health Day. In commemoration of this day, we honor and remember all who have battled with mental health challenges, as their strength and resilience inspire us to continue building a future grounded in healing and hope.
